Tips on Getting a Book Published

Writing a romance novel, a children’s book, a non-fiction story or any type of work requires a great deal of time, sometimes even months to years. After your finish your masterpiece, the question remains of how to publish it. By taking a few steps, you can help your book find the appropriate publisher.

Consider Self-publishing

While you are invested your money, your time and all of the effort, it can be more profitable to publish a book yourself. You do not have to hire an expensive agent or share a majority of your profits with a publishing company. However, this option requires plenty of time and the initial investment in you.

Hire an Agent

While it is possible to publish without an agent, having an agent makes the process go quicker and allow you access to publishing houses that will not accept unsolicited material.

Make a List of Publishers

Create a list of publishers and research them carefully. Find ones that accept unsolicited manuscripts and ones that accept your genre of writing, in general. If you did not hire an agent, you will want to send out manuscripts to companies that publish your type of work and accept unsolicited manuscripts. Approach companies that require agents by sending a query letter first.

Well-written Query Letter

If you cannot afford an agent, try sending a well-written query letter that includes your experience as writer and the plot of your story. Your query letter should state what you have included with it, whether it is the first chapter of your book or a few pages of the document.

Proofread, Edit, Proofread, Proofread

Always proofread your work multiple times and make necessary adjustments. After each change, you should reread the document. Other people's eyes may notice mistakes you cannot see, so make sure you have somebody else look over your work.
