How to Pitch a Flat Roof

No matter what type of roof you currently have, it already has a pitch to it. Law already requires a certain amount of pitch. However if you are looking to add room for an attic or just want the roof to look different then yes, you can change the pitch. There are some certain basics you should know prior to making the decision.

  • Make a decision on what the exact pitch is that you want in your roof. There are many pre-manufactured trusses and this is the easiest way to accomplish this goal. If you want a pitch that is not currently being pre-manufactured you will have to make your own and that is only for the very accomplished do-it-yourself types. It requires special equipment and a good working knowledge of roofing.

  • Ask yourself before beginning some questions. Do you want to retain the ceilings you currently have? Do you want to have steel or wood trusses? Do you want to add to or reduce your attic space? What type of layout do you want?

  • Do not begin your project in the winter so as not to damage to your homes wooden frame. You must have this entire process well planned out and prepared for or the ramifications could be expensive in the long run.

  • Make certain everything is exact to your specifications prior to installation. Once the trusses are installed they cannot be modified. The manufactured trusses are very light and easy to install. Your time frame will be decreased dramatically by using them if at all possible.

  • Enjoy the newly pitched roof when done. The addition of your attic room or that new look on your roofline is completed.
