How to Plan Luau Party Decorations

Luaus are one of the most popular parties all throughout America. Because of this, planning a luau party and buying decorations has become very simple. Once you have decided to have a luau, making the decision as to what type of decorations you want is the hardest part.

  • Table Decorations- The most common luau table decorations include grass skirts, pineapples or mini palm trees to set on the table. If you want a more natural look, place pineapples and coconuts on the table for a more tropical feel.

  • Accessories- No luau would be complete without leis, grass skirts and coconut bras. These can be picked up at any party store and even dollar stores during the summer time. Often times, you can even purchase these items in sets. If you want the bare minimum of accessories for your party, choose leis over anything else. There has never been a luau where people didn't get leied.

  • Palm Trees- There are thousands of palm trees all over Hawaii. Because of this, palm trees are one of the simplest decorations that you can find. Paper palm trees can be picked up at your local party store, or even in the craft store. This will give the backyard a warm, tropical feel even if it's snowing and freezing cold outside.

  • Lighting- Tiki torches are the best type of lighting for a luau. These are inexpensive and create a lot of light that is perfect for any luau or other backyard gathering.

  • Paper Accessories- These items include napkins, paper plates, and cups. These can easily be found at many party stores. Because there are so many different ways that you can decorate a luau, often times you can find plates, napkins and cups in tropical flower designs, tikis, tropical birds or fish, or even outlines of the islands. The choice is up to you.

  • Seating- Luaus are always held outside. To make your luau seem more authentic, place picnic tables or lawn chairs in the yard for people to sit at. This makes it feel as if you are really sitting in a tropical space with all the other decorations. If you are limited on chairs and seating for people, sitting on the ground is always an option. Most people will think nothing of sitting on the ground at a luau, if they were at the beach, they would sit in the sand.

  • Other Decorations- Adding a sand pit, seashells, and even posters of tikis are a great way to add to the feel of a luau as well as create a nice place to take pictures or just hang out.
