How to Plan a Maternity Items Wardrobe

Pregnancy is a very exciting time in a woman's life. Many are eager to go out and purchase a lot of maternity clothes at once, but it is actually more practical to gradually add pieces as the body starts to change.

  • Shop gradually. This is especially true for first-time mothers, as the size of the belly bump may grow slower or faster than expected. It is best to add a few pieces each trimester.

  • Purchase a comfortable pair of jeans. These days, many maternity jeans are made with elastic material that is designed to grow with the mother as the pregnancy progresses.

  • Add a pair of black pants to the maternity wardrobe. Black goes with virtually everything and will also conceal added weight gain from pregnancy. Black pants are also versatile and can be worn to business meetings with a blazer or to a dinner date out on the town with a flowing tunic.

  • Invest in a neutral cardigan sweater. The color can be white, black or gray. These three colors can all be used to dress up a casual outfit. A cardigan can also be paired with jeans, skirts or dress slacks.

  • Purchase an A-line dress. This free flowing dress design can carry a woman from early pregnancy all the way up to the delivery date. It should be classy, flattering and able to grow with a woman's figure.

  • Find a basic white shirt. Make sure that the shirt has a collar as it will be appropriate for work and leisure. A crisp white shirt works well with jeans, pants or skirts and can be dressed up by adding the right accessories.
