How to Plant a Container Garden

Container gardens are an excellent alternative to regular gardens. They are great for those who live in an apartment or have limited yard space. Having the plants in containers makes it easy to move them as needed, as well as protect them from harsh weather conditions.

Items Needed

  • Containers or pots

  • Plants or seeds

  • Potting soil or compost

  • Small stones

Container Gardening

  1. Gather the containers for the plants. There are a wide variety of things that may be used as containers, such as clay pots, barrels or hanging baskets.

  2. Find a good potting soil to use for the plants. Compost is excellent to use, but a mixture of potting soil, sand and peat moss works well too.

  3. Place stones in the bottom of the containers to allow the water to drain without much soil erosion. If water is unable to drain, it could drown the plants or cause the roots to rot.

  4. Fill the containers with compost or soil, leaving a few inches at the top.

  5. Choose which plants you would like to grow in your containers. Good choices for fruits and vegetables include strawberries, baby carrots, peppers, spring onions, cucumbers and leaf lettuce. Good choices for flowers include pansies, marigolds and snapdragon plants.

  6. Decide whether to start with seeds or plants, and plant them in their containers.

  7. Check to see how much sunlight each plant requires. Many plants can be started indoors then moved outside when they have started to sprout.

  8. Make sure the plants receive enough sunlight and water them frequently.
