How to Grow a Container Garden
Contrary to popular belief, you don't need to have a "green thumb" or spacious land in order to grow a container garden. Plotted plants and plant boxes can be distributed on a patio or deck. Hanging baskets can also be used for your vegetation.
- Use your patio or deck for your garden. No matter how small your deck or patio is you can still strategically place plotted plants and hanging baskets so as not to overcrowd the area. In addition, you can use wooden barrels to contain your plants or flowers.
- Choose the right soil. The soil that you select will vary depending on your geographical location and climate but you need to make sure that it has good drainage and retains a good amount of water so that the roots stay moist.
- Choose a spot with adequate sunlight. You need to have at least 4 hours of continuous sunlight for various vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots and cucumbers. Most fruits need ample sunlight as well. Take this into consideration when developing your container garden and the fruits and vegetables that you wish to grow.
- Fertilize and water frequently. To get your container garden started you will need to water at least three times a day. Using fertilizer will promote advanced growth for your plants. Fish fertilizer is great for achieving this.
- Start seeding early. If you are planting flowers and vegetables give them a head start by planting early in the spring. If you live in a cooler region, then the potted seeds can be placed in the windowsill and taken out once the weather warms up.
