How to Plant a Lawn From Scratch
Planting a lawn from scratch can be done easily as long as you have the right materials. Purchasing good lawn fertilizer and seed is imperative to ensure that your grass will grow quickly and evenly so that you can enjoy a lush green lawn all summer long.
Things You'll Need:
- Soil testing kit
- Lawn fertilizer
- Lime
- Rake
- Lawn spreader
- Grass seed
- Check the pH level of the soil where you want your new lawn to grow with a soil testing kit. This kit can be purchased at your local hardware store. The pH level of your soil should be between six and seven. If it looks like it is lower than a six, add lime to your soil to bring this level up.
- Purchase a good fertilizer for your soil before planting any seed to encourage growth. Make sure that you use an ample amount and spread it out evenly on the ground.
- Inspect the area of your lawn that you want the seed to grow making sure that there are no rocks, stones or other debris that may get in the way. When you are sure that your lawn is clear then you should rake out your entire lawn making sure that the soil is smoothed out evenly and that there are crevices in the soil for the grass seed to fall into.
- Fill your lawn spreader with the grass seed that you have purchased and walk across the lawn spreading grass seed as you go. Make sure that you are walking in one direction across your lawn releasing seed and lining yourself up against the previous row of seed. When you are finished in this direction, release seed in the opposite direction to ensure that you have covered the entire lawn.
- Rake your lawn making sure that a small amount of soil is covering the seed that you have just put down.
- Water your lawn thoroughly after you have completely spread all of the grass seed. A light watering should be done as well a few times a day for one week. After one week you should water your lawn once a day making sure that the seeds look like they are starting to grow.
