How to Practice Mass Transit Etiquette

When taking mass transit, you are up against over a thousand other people who also want to get to where they are going on time. Learn how to practice mass transit etiquette to make your riding experience smoother and less stressful, and still reach your ultimate destination in one piece.

Purchase your ticket before you attempt to board the bus or train. Nothing slows down the process like the conductor having to deal with someone who was negligent. If you come prepared, the process will go that much smoother. Also, avoid carrying too many bags or other items, which will only create a disruption as you board the transit vehicle. Wear shoes that are comfortable and easy to navigate in.

Board the bus or train calmly and stake out an open seat or a standing area with access to railing to maintain balance. Be courteous to the other passengers by avoiding any pushing or shoving. Offering your seat to expecting mothers, children, or the elderly is an excellent form of transit etiquette.

Remain calm and quiet throughout your commute. Try not to make eye contact with others or invade their privacy. Don't listen to music on your headphones so loud that others can hear it. Be cautious not to infringe on other passengers personal space.

When you are ready to exit the train, do so again in an orderly fashion. Don't shove any passengers aside, as this may ignite an avoidable confrontation.
