How to Prepare for Local Moving

Regardless of whether you hire local movers or plan to prepare for local moving yourself, there are plenty of things to consider and take care of. Planning and organizing early in the process will ensure a safe and easier local move. Inevitably, there are last minute details and problems to be resolved, but keeping a notebook containing everything about your move will help keep you focused and on track.

  1. Purchase a small notebook that easily fits within a purse or luggage. Document everything about your local moved in the notebook. This keeps everything handy and organized in one location and eliminates lost notes and phone numbers.

  2. Determine if you want to hire local movers or handle the job yourself. If you have very little to move, you might want to consider doing the move yourself or possibly use friends or relatives for help. Consider moving companies when you have a large amount of household goods, heavy furniture or health concerns.

  3. Make a list in your notebook of every detail that needs to be accomplished concerning the local move. List names and numbers for moving companies and call for quotes. Or check with truck rental companies for daily rates and dolly rental costs if moving yourself. List every utility company you need to contact for disconnecting service and those for new service.

  4. Arrange to hire moving companies if needed or secure commitments from friends to help you move.

  5. Buy colored adhesive labels to affix to every box, furniture piece or appliance being moved. Dedicate specific colors for each room. Helpers or movers can easily identify what box or item belongs in each room at the new house or apartment by the label.

  6. Purchase moving boxes, Bungee cords, tape, rope and anything required for packing if not being provided by a local moving company.

  7. Create a check list in your notebook of every personal affiliation that needs to be advised of your new address such as employers, stocks, bonds, health plans and so on. Register your children at the new school if changing districts.  Fill out a change of address card with the post office.
