How to Prepare for Long Distance Moving
Preparing for a long distance move can be hectic and stressful. You have to pack in one area while making sure everything is ready in the location you are moving to. Stress is added to the situation if one thing is left undone. There are several things you can do to eliminate the stress and make the move go smoothly.
Prepare early
Start writing down things long before you have to move. You should also write down things as they come to your mind. Put the papers in a binder so you can save the information and refer to it later.
Work backwards
Sometimes working from the date of the move backwards can help you think of things you need to do a lot faster. For example, write in your journal what you want to have done one week before the move. Work your way backwards from that week.
Search for a moving company early
Get quotes and compare moving companies. Moving companies can get pretty busy, so preparing early can help you avoid being stuck on moving day with no company to move you. The companies have certain times when they get really busy.
Throw out things you do not want
This is the best time to get rid of excess times that you do not want. It will also make the move easier. Create different piles such as items to sell, donate and trash. This will eliminate having to do this when you arrive to your new location.
Pack wisely
Start early and use a color code system to pack. You can use almost any system to mark boxes. It will make it easier to unpack the items when you reach your destination. You will also feel less rushed and stressed the closer you get to the moving day.
Research your new location
Use the Internet to learn about the new area. You want to look for the nearest grocery stores or schools. Preparing early will help you learn where things are when you get there.
Arrange your utilities
Set up utilities at least two weeks before you arrive. Schedule to turn off your utilities in the your current location. It will make your move easier and reduce extra tasks to accomplish once you get to the new location. It can take some time to have the utilities turned on if you do it after you arrive.
Switch mail
Make sure you change your mailing address with the post office. Take care of this in advance because it will delay mail if you wait. You could miss important information such as bills.
