How to Prevent Child Abuse
Child abuse is a serious matter and can happen if children and parents are not aware of what to look out for. There are a variety of ways to prevent child abuse and it is important to teach, educate and communicate with children about abuse on a regular basis.
- Understand the meaning of abuse. One of the best ways to prevent child abuse is to make sure children understand that any harm is abuse, not just sexual.
- Show children what to say to prevent child abuse. Teach them how to yell "no" or scream loud in a low-pitched voice if they are placed in an uncomfortable situation.
- Talk to children about how to handle strangers and people they do not know well to help prevent child abuse. Teach them to avoid strangers and be alert of people who are not family members or close friends.
- Teach children how to call the police. Show them how to dial 911 if they feel they are in danger. Explain to children how to identify a police officer. Calling 911 is the easiest way to remember how to get help and since it can be done from almost anywhere its important kids know.
- Educate children about abuse. Watch television programs that educate children about abuse and how to prevent it from happening.
- Do research on signs of abuse. Look for physical changes as well as changes in a child’s attitude.
- Communicate with children and always be involved in their life. Learn their daily routines, such as what they do before and after school, to help prevent child abuse.
- Teach children that no one has the right to physically hurt them in any way or make them uncomfortable. Explain the difference between discipline and inflicted pain to help prevent child abuse.
