A Safe Place

Domestic abuse requires a unique need in terms of a safe place to go. When in trouble, many can go to a trusted friend or family member. The abuser may harass friends and family members until he gets the information he needs. As a result, those options may not be the safest or even practical. Abused women shelters provide a safe, secure, confidential place for women to go without fear of being detected or harassed.

Necessary Assistance

The needs of abused women are met at these shelters. The immediate assistance involves emotional, psychological and spiritual comfort. Shelters have staff on hand to help women with the initial emotional trauma involved with their situation. They also help with medical attention if needed. If the woman has to stay longer to sort things out, they provide basic needs for them and their children. Some shelters also allow and help provide for pets. A place to sleep, food and other needs are provided. Guidance is also provided to help women figure out what to do about their abusive situation. With the help of the staff at these shelters, women realize that they should not live with a life of abuse. Abused women are shown the steps to take to get their lives back. Job assistance programs and transitional housing programs are also provided to help abused women and their children.

Prevention

Many shelters provide programs and education to prevent any type of family abuse before it starts. Some programs focus on young children to help them learn how to deal with high emotions and how to work well with others. There are also middle school, high school and teen dating education programs to help students understand what is not acceptable and how to treat each other in order to prevent abuse. Shelters run mostly on donations from others to keep these much needs services available for those who need them.
