How to Prevent Drips When Cleaning Windows

Clean, sparkling windows improve your view to the outside and the appearance of your home or office. Smudges, dirt and film easily wipe away with a mild soap and water or a vinegar and water solution. Use the following techniques, recommended by professional window washers, to prevent drips when cleaning your windows.

Items needed:

  • Bucket

  • Mild soap or vinegar

  • Water

  • Double sided squeegee

  • Microfiber cloth or lint-free rags

Instructions:

  1. Begin with a bucket containing mild soap and water or mix ½ cup of distilled vinegar with one gallon of water.

  2. Dunk the squeegee in the cleaning solution and gently scrub the entire glass surface. Make sure you wet the entire window to allow the squeegee to glide smoothly across the glass.

  3. Wipe the blade of the squeegee to prevent drips and place in the upper left hand corner of the window and go across the entire top of the window. Work the squeegee from left to right. Wipe the blade with the cloth after each stroke.

  4. Place the corner of the squeegee in the upper left corner and work down the side of the window, from the top left to the bottom left corners. Continue vertically across the entire window. Overlap each stroke slightly, to prevent streaks. Wipe the blade between each stroke of the squeegee.

  5. Complete the window by placing the squeegee in the lower left corner and drawing it horizontally to the lower right corner. Wipe the remaining water off the window sill with your cloth.

  • For best results, wash windows on a cloudy day to prevent spotting. Wash windows twice a year to reduce dirt and grime build up.
