How to Prime a Deep Well Pump

For a deep well pump to work properly, it must be primed correctly. Priming the pump allows the water in the well to circulate through the pump and out through the pipes. Priming a deep well pump is a simple but time-consuming process.

  1. Locate the prime plug on the top of the pump. It should be rubber or plastic. Pull the plug to remove it.

  2. Place the end of the water hose into the hole on top of the pump, and turn the water on to run it through the hole. Allow the water to fill the entire pump case. When it is full, the water will begin to flow out.

  3. Remove the hose from the pump, and replace the prime plug. Turn on the pump and allow it to run until there are no bubbles present. This may take several minutes.

  4. Remove the plug and use the hose to fill the pump casing with water again. Place the plug back into the hole, but do not push it down. Leave it loosely on top of the hole. Allow the case to fill and all the bubbles to run out.

  5. Repeat this process until bubbles no longer come out of the pumping case. When the pump is fully primed, water will run out without bubbles. Replace the prime plug and press it down into the hole to secure it in place. Once the pump has been properly primed, the well can be used as desired.
