How to Print Black and White Photos Using Only Black Ink

Most printers have the option to print in color. This option is usually a default feature, which means that all documents will be printer in color unless the printer settings are changed. If you wish to print black and white photos, you can change the printer setting to print only in black ink.

  1. Click on the "Image" scale at the top of your photo editing software page. On some editing programs, you may need to click on the "Edit" option and then click "Photo Options." All editing programs are different, so the terms and labels may vary by software program.

  2. Click "Mode," and then choose "Grayscale" from the list of options.

  3. Click on the "File" tab in the program toolbar.

  4. Click on the "Print" button. A printer window will open.

  5. Click on the name of your printer. If you always use the same printer, click on the name of the printer and put a check in the box next to the phrase "Make Default Printer." This means your computer will always use this printer until otherwise directed.

  6. Click on the "Preferences" button.

  7. Click on the drop-down menu next to the "Color" or "Image Tone" heading.

  8. Select "Black and White" or "Black Ink" from the drop down menu. If you do not have a colored cartridge in your printer or the printer model only prints in black and white, the drop down menu will only show one option.

  9. Click the "OK" or "Save" button to close out of the printer settings window.

  10. Click on the "Print" or "OK" button.
