How to Protect Your Eyes When Using a Computer
Computers are a large part of our day-to-day lives. Because people are often in front of them for long periods of time, they can cause eyestrain and as a result other health problems such as headaches. Although eliminating the daily use of computers may not be possible, there is a way to work with them and protect your eyes in the process.
- Use a larger screen as opposed to a smaller one.
- Situate your monitor so that there is minimal glare on the screen.
- Increase the font size if you are struggling to read the print on the screen.
- Take breaks when using a computer for long periods at a time. Every half hour look away from your screen at an object that is further away to refocus your eyes. Every two hours take a 15-minute break away from your computer screen.
- Blink on a regular basis. When using a computer people often blink less often than they do under normal circumstances. If needed, apply re-wetting drops to restore the moisture to your eyes.
- If your vision blurs after working on the computer for periods at a time, discuss computer glasses with your optometrist.
