How to Purchase the Best Rechargeable Battery

Between television remotes, cordless phones, video games and any number of other electronics, it's hard to find a home that doesn't use batteries. Purchasing more batteries can get very expensive for some, so rechargeable batteries are a very good option. Even though the initial cost is higher, it more than makes up for it with how rarely you'll have to replace them.

  1. Make sure the batteries you are buying are Ni-MH (Nickel Metal hybrid) cells, as they are good for electronics like digital cameras that drain batteries quickly. They almost always come already charged, so there's no time spent charging them before using and they will hold a charge for several months.

  2. Look at is the milli Amp hour, or mAh, rating. This tells you what the battery's charge capacity is. The higher this rating is, the better, as that means it will hold more power. Currently, for AA batteries 2900 is the highest rating you will see, though anything 2700 or higher is very good.

  3. Look at how many times you can charge the batteries before having to buy replacements and how long they hold a charge. This information might not be printed on the package, so it's not a bad idea to do some research online before deciding on a brand.

  4. Make sure your original purchase is a kit that includes the charger. Anywhere you see rechargeable batteries will sell kits with the charger for the batteries, as well as replacement batteries. Rechargeable batteries will do you no good if you have no place to charge them.

  5. Stick to a brand for your replacement batteries once you pick one. Not all chargers are compatible with all batteries.
