How to Put Formica Over Formica Countertops

Formica is a popular material for countertops because of its durable nature. It can be difficult to remodel these counters. If you’re wanting to update the look of your kitchen but keep this durable material you can simply install new Formica over the existing Formica counter.

Formica is a great countertop material as it does not scratch or chip very easily. This durable laminate can be laid over particle board. However, if you already have Formica on your countertops but are ready to replace it with more Formica, then this can be easily done with the right tools.

What You’ll Need:

  • Carbide Tip Blade Knife

  • Small Paint Roller

  • Rags

  • Pencil

  • Rubber Roller

  • Measuring Tape

  • Formica Sheet Kit

  • Kitchen Cleaner

  1. Apply a kitchen cleaner degreaser to thoroughly clean your current Formica countertop. Allow it to dry for about an hour. While it is drying you can measure the length and the depth of the countertop.

  2. Transfer the measurements from the countertop onto the new sheets of your Formica kit. Mark the back of the Formica with the measurements and draw the necessary lines.

  3. Use your carbide tip blade to cut out the laminate sheets. A straight edge will need to be sued to help keep the blade cutting in straight lines.

  4. Measure the length and the height of the edging of the countertop. Cut all of the strips that match the edges height and are the necessary length. You can make the edge strips using your carbide tip blade knife.

  5. Take a moment to clean off all of the debris on your counter such as dust that may have formed. Roll the adhesive onto the countertop. Glue on the edge strips so that they are even with the countertop. Use the rubber roller to get rid of the bubbles on the laminate.
