How to Put Line on a Fly-Fishing Reel

Casting a fly-fishing reel is much more difficult than casting any other type of fishing reel. Fly-fishing is an art that must be mastered to achieve success. Casting a fly-fishing reel is also a very empowering way to fish once you get the hang of it.

  1. Grab your fly-fishing rod and begin practicing using only a small brightly colored string as your lure instead of an actual fly. You can do this on any body of water or land where you have enough room to cast.

  2. Use your strong hand to hold the fly-fishing rod with your thumb sitting on top of it. You’ll need to hold your rod 4 to 6 inches up from your reel.

  3. Use the opposite hand to pull 15 or so feet of line out.

  4. Continue to hold the line in the hand that isn’t holding your rod.

  5. Cast your rod by moving it backward to about the 10 o’clock position over your shoulder with your dominant hand. Sling your rod forward to about the 2 o’clock position to complete the cast. You’ll need to continue this motion over and over in a natural rhythm.

  6. Aim your casts by looking at the tip of your rod. Wherever the tip of your rod is pointing is where your fly will land.

  7. Visit a fly-fishing shop to talk to fly-fishing specialist about developing your casting technique if you need help. A lot of fly-fishing shops have casting ponds and offer fly-fishing lessons.
