Supplies

  • Dog bed

  • Dog food

  • Collar and leash

  • Chew toys

  • Dog treats

  • Choose a reputable breeder who never sells their puppies until they are at least seven weeks old. Ask any questions you may have about the dog’s health and temperament. If the breeder refuses to answer these questions, look somewhere else.

  • Ask for any suggestions how to care for your puppy. Also inquire to see if the breeder is available to answer any questions in the future.

  • Provide a dog bed for your puppy. Unlike other dogs, bulldogs cannot curl up. A bed will provide comfort when it lies on its side or stretches out. Be sure to purchase one large enough for the dog when it reaches adult size.

  • Purchase stainless steel food bowls large enough to accommodate the dog's face. English bulldogs tend to have flat faces, and it causes them to put their lips to the bowl to eat or drink. Stainless steel bowls do not retain food odors and are easy to clean.

  • Feed your pup the same brand it was fed before you got it for at least three months. This can reduce the chance of digestive issues. Gradually incorporate the new formula into your puppy’s diet. Always have clean, fresh water for your dog.

  • Wipe the muzzle of your puppy’s face frequently. Food and debris can be caught in the folds of the skin and cause irritation, foul odor or infection.

  • Exercise by taking it out for a nice walk. Attach a leash to its collar to avoid running away.

  • Have several types of chew toys for your dog at home. English bulldogs tend to enjoy chewing on everything. Rather than chewing furniture, divert its attention by giving it plenty of chew toys. Make sure they are made of hard nylon or rubber.

  • Visit the veterinarian every year for an annual checkup and any vaccinations needed. Bulldogs can be prone to health problems, so it is best be safe, even if it means visiting the vet more often.
