How to Receive SSI and Social Security

Social Security and SSI are two different government programs. Each is intended to supplement a qualified person's income. SSI stands for Supplemental Security Income and is designed to help disabled, blind or elderly people who have limited income. Social Security payments help those who cannot work due to long-term disability or medical conditions.

Things You Will Need:

  • SSI and Social Security applications

  • Birth certificate

  • Social Security number

  • Medical records

  • Tax forms

  • Employment documentation

  1. Complete the required application. If you are applying for both SSI and Social Security, you will need to complete both applications. You can obtain the application forms online at socialsecurity.org. You can also apply over the phone by calling 1-800-722-1213.

  2. Prepare for your telephone interview. Prior to being approved for SSI or Social Security benefits, you will need to successfully complete a telephone interview. This interview typically lasts an hour. You have the freedom to schedule the interview at a time that is convenient for you. The person who interviews you will ask you about your disability, medical situation and financial situation. The government provides applicants with a Disability Starter Kit to help them prepare for the interview process. This kit is available online at socialsecurity.org, or you can request that a copy of the kit be mailed to your home.

  3. Visit the local Social Security office in your area. Obtain a copy of your Social Security Benefits and Disability Report. Bring your Benefits and Report to the local Social Security office. If you have not received a copy of this report in the mail, you may obtain a copy online by visiting socialsecurity.org.
