How to Recharge a Lawn Mower Battery

If your lawn mower won't start, it could just need to have the battery recharged. There is nothing on a lawn mower to keep the battery charged, such as an alternator on a car. Recharging your mower battery is simple and should be done periodically.

Items Needed

  • battery charger

  1. Park your lawn mower on a flat surface close to where your battery charger will be plugged in. Turn the engine off and the ignition switch to the off position.

  2. Plug in your battery charger to a 110 outlet. Make sure the mower is within reach of the battery charger. If it is not, move it closer so there will no strain on the battery charger cables.

  3. Connect the red (positive) charger cable to the positive battery terminal on your mower.

  4. Place the black (negative) charger cable on the negative battery terminal on your mower.

  5. Set the battery charger to the charge position. The lawn mower battery should begin to charge.

  6. Read the manufacturer's instruction manual for the length of time the battery should charge. Some battery chargers have an automatic shut-off to prevent any damage to the battery being charged. If this is not the case with your battery charger, refer to the owner's manual for suggested charging times.

  7. Unplug the battery charger from the wall when charging is complete.

  8. Remove the charger cables from the lawn mower battery, taking the black cable off first. Disconnect the red charger cable from the battery.

  9. Turn the mower on, and let it run for around 30 minutes to fully charge.
