How to Record Music in Garageband

Garageband allows you to mimic some of the capabilities of expensive music studio equipment without spending the same amount of money. With this software program you can record and edit music as you create it. Garageband is an Apple-compatible software, so you can only use it on Macs, iPads and other Apple-compatible hardware.

  1. Select "Create a New Project" from the main menu after you open Garageband.

  2. Type a name for your new project in the space provided.

  3. Adjust the metronome if you are planning to use it. It is not required, and you can deactivate it on this screen.

  4. Click "Create" to take you to the main screen.

  5. Click "Track" in the main menu, then click "Delete Track." Garageband attaches a piano track to every new project, so you should remove that first in order to clear the track list.

  6. Click "Track," then click "New Track." From the top menu, click "Real Instrument" and choose the instrument you will be using from the list provided. Click "Create" again.

  7. Click the red record button at the bottom of the screen when you're ready to begin recording. Click the record button again to stop the recording. If you want to add another instrument or layer to the project, Click "Track" and then "New Track." Click "Real Instrument" again, and select the new instrument. As you add layers, make sure you use headphones so that the combined tracks do not play through your speakers and then record as part of the new, single instrument track.
