How to Recycle Used Auto Parts

If you have an old car that is no longer running, or have recently totaled out your car and would like to recycle the used auto parts, there are many different places that you can take these auto parts to recycle the good ones or scrap the parts that are not able to be reused.

  1. Determine what parts are worth recycling and which parts are to be used for scrap. Any broken parts should be used for scrap. Any good parts that are able to be reused should be recycled.

  2. Remove any reusable parts and clean them as much as you can.

  3. Bring these parts to a used auto parts store to sell them for a profit or donate the parts to a local charity that can benefit from the sales of the auto parts that you donate.

  4. Contact your local town hall or city office to find out where a rubber collection center is.

  5. Bring all tires, rubber hoses and belts to the closest rubber collection center so that they can be properly disposed of.

  6. Remove the auto accessories from your car that are salvageable such as car seat covers, steering wheel covers and floor mats. You can save these items if you want or donate them to a local charity such as Goodwill.

  7. Take all remaining metal and steel parts to a local salvage yard or scrap center. You are paid by the pound at a scrapyard for the remaining weight of your vehicle.

  8. Consider donating your car to a charity such as free charity cars. They will fix your vehicle and give it to a family that is in need of a vehicle. You will also be able to write off the fair market value of the vehicle that you donate on your taxes.
