How to Recycle a Used Appliance

Recycling used appliances is a great way to help the environment, and probably isn't as difficult as you may think. Many dumps and landfills have appliance recycling programs. If the appliance is in working order, there is likely someone near you that would love to have it.

Are you in the market for a new refrigerator, microwave or blender and unsure what to do with your old appliance? Recycling used appliances greatly benefits the environment. Here is how to find a way to recycle any appliances you no longer want.

1.  Check with the company where you are buying your new appliance. Some companies will take your old appliance with them for recycling when they deliver the new appliance.

2.  Donate appliances to someone who can use them. Is it in working order or easily fixed? If so, there is probably someone in your local community thrilled to have it! Contact thrift shops, homeless centers, Goodwill and other organizations that work with low income families.

3.  Allow children to play and be creative with appliances safe for their use. Area preschools may be interested in small appliances that no longer work for their dramatic play areas. Microwaves, coffee pots, toasters and telephones are some examples of items they might be interested in.

4.  See your appliances hit the stage! College, high school or community drama clubs or theatres might have a need for props.

5.  Call your city or county to see what appliance recycling programs they offer. Some areas designate a certain day each year for appliances to be brought to the landfill for recycling. Others offer the service year round.
