How to Reduce Eye Infection

An eye infection is not just an annoyance, it can also be contagious. If it is not taken care of properly, not only can you become more ill, but you can make other people ill as well. Take proper steps to be sure that the infection is cared for properly.

Items needed:

  • Prescription medication

  • Washcloth

  • Over-the-counter eye drops

  1. Make an appointment to see your primary care physician once you believe that you have an eye infection. Most eye infections will need to be treated with prescription drugs. Make sure that you fill any prescriptions that the doctor ills out for you. Avoiding the purchase of prescription drugs may save you money in the short term, but will hurt your overall health and pocketbook in the long term.

  2. Take all prescription drugs once you have them filled. You may have to take an oral antibiotic, use medicated eye drops or both. Be sure that you take the proper dosages and continue to take all of the medication until it is all gone.

  3. Keep your eye clean to keep infection from coming back. You can do this best by using a clean washcloth. Soak the washcloth in very warm water until the cloth is completely wet. Wring out the water and place the warm, damp cloth over your eye. Allow it to rest there for at least a minute. Then, take the cloth off. Repeat this several times a day. Keeping the eye clean will improve your comfort and overall eye health.
