How to Reduce Flood Insurance

If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, you can save lots of money in damage repairs by investing in flood insurance. There are steps you can take that will help you to reduce the cost of your flood insurance.

  1. Compare flood insurance companies in order to get a better rate. You may be able to reduce your flood insurance payments by switching to a different insurance company.

  2. Raise your home. Getting your home raised will drop your flood insurance costs because it is harder for the water to damage a home that is raised. Pier and beam houses are very easy to raise.

  3. Point out any drainage improvements that have been made to the surrounding areas. These improvements can make the area less likely to flood and may reduce your flood insurance costs.

  4. Survey the land. If you believe the area you live on is higher than stated in your insurance premium, you can have someone survey your land and prove it is at a higher elevation and less likely to flood.

  5. Provide openings in the foundation around your home so that flood water can rush through in the event of a flood. Proving an area for water to flow through easily will decrease damage from floods and reduce your flood insurance premium.

  6. Work with the community. Working with the community to add certain features that will make it less likely to flood can help reduce the cost for everyone. Adding beams around a river that is likely to flood is one way to decrease the costs.
