How to Save Money on a Flood Insurance Policy

Flood insurance is designed to help homeowners and renters replace their personal belongings in the event of a damaging flood. Most banks and financial institutions require that homeowners purchase a flood insurance policy if their property is found to be in a flood zone. Floord insurance is expensive, but it is possible to save money on a policy.

  1. Have your property surveyed. Do not waste money on flood insurance if your property is not located in a flood zone. Property surveyors and financial institutions often perform a flood search on a piece of property prior to approving a mortgage application. If your property is found to be in a flood zone, you will need to purchase flood insurance. If your property is not found to be in a flood zone, you can avoid purchasing flood insurance all together if you choose.

  2. Determine how much flood insurance you need. Add up an estimated total value of the contents of your home. Purchasing more insurance than you really need will greatly increase the costs of your flood insurance policies. You should have enough coverage that you could replace all of your belongings and no more.

  3. Shop around for policies. Many insurance companies offer flood insurance policies to renters and homeowners. Do your research. Compare policy coverage, deductibles and monthly payments to ensure that you are getting the best possible insurance policy for your money.

  4. Inquire about low-risk policies. If your property is found to be along the outer edge of a flood zone or located in a low-risk area, ask your insurance advisor about purchasing a less expensive low-risk flood insurance policy.
