What are the Benefits of Open vs. Closed Rhinoplasty?

How to Reduce Swelling After Revision Rhinoplasty

The most important objective in revision rhinoplasty is a natural looking nose. Revision rhinoplasty is performed to correct breathing problems, control allergy symptoms and correct the cosmetic appearance of the nose after a previous surgery. Swelling may be major following corrective revision rhinoplasty, but it can be controlled.

Items Needed:

  • Arnica montana

  • Backrest

  • Bromelain

  • Ibuprofen

  • Ice

  • Plastic sandwich or freezer bag

  • Recliner

  • Several pillows

  • Soft cloth

  1. Utilize a backrest that is normally for the purpose of reading in bed to elevate the head, while awake. Elevating the head increases blood flow and reduces swelling in the nose region.

  2. Recline the head slightly in a reclining chair for rest and sleep.

  3. Position the head on several pillows when sleeping in a bed.

  4. Follow the surgeon’s orders and rest adequately during the healing process.

  5. Place ice in a plastic sandwich or freezer bag, then wrap the bag in a soft cloth.

  6. Apply the icepack to the nose region for 20 minutes and then remove for 40 minutes.

  7. Alternate the time the icepack is applied throughout the day to reduce the swelling from surgery.

  8. Take ibuprofen according to physician’s directions to reduce the swelling.

  9. Opt for a homeopathic herb, such as arnica montana or bromelain to reduce the swelling. Both herbs have anti-inflammatory effects, when taken a few days pre-surgery and a few days after surgery.

  10. Watch small children closely, as toddlers may rear back and bump the nose with a head or hit the face with a toy.

  11. Explain to the child the danger of hitting someone in the face after nose surgery.
