How to Reduce the Side Effects From Iron Supplements

Reduce side effects from iron supplements by paying close attention the dosage and type of supplements. Drink lots of fluids with your iron pills. If you experience serious side effects, such as blood in the stool or cramping, call a doctor immediately.

  • Reduce side effects by first reducing the dosage. You may be taking too much iron. Consult with your physician about the right dosage for your condition.

  • Ask your doctor about taking ferrous sulfate with food. This typically results in fewer unpleasant side effects, typically associated with the iron that must be taken between meals.

  • Increase iron absorption by drinking orange juice. In general, you want to drink eight ounces of water or juice with iron supplements. Your doctor may also recommend you take a vitamin C supplement along with your iron supplement to assist with absorption.

  • Address constipation symptoms. Taking iron pills often results in constipation. A stool softener may help reduce this side effect.

  • Take action if you vomit or experience nausea. Contact your doctor to inquire about possibly switching to a different form of iron supplement or reducing the dosage.

  • Keep your iron supplements in the correct temperature. Storing iron in humid and warm environments may cause the pills to deteriorate.

  • Avoid taking certain foods and substances with iron pills. Milk, antacids, calcium pills and caffeine may make it difficult for your body to absorb iron.

  • Call a doctor immediately if you see blood in the stool or other signs of internal bleeding, such as cramping, muscle soreness or gastrointestinal pains.
