How to Reduce the Side Effects of Niacin
Also known as vitamin B3 and nicotinic acid, and often prescribed to reduce cholesterol and to individuals who suffer with a high risk of heart attack, Niacin produces side effects that include itching, hot flashes, headaches, dizziness and upset stomach. Following certain techniques can reduce the side effects of Niacin in those taking the product.
- Talk to your doctor and get clarification on the possible side effects of Niacin. Ensure that he knows all the other medications you consume. You cannot take some medication concurrently with Niacin.
- Adjusting the dosage of Niacin can help reduce its side effects. Consider the immediate–release Niacin capsules. You may consume the same dosage over a longer period of time by taking a smaller amount and building up to that dosage. This process will encourage a slow adjustment to Niacin and should minimize the side effects experienced. Another way to approach the same slow adjustment involves splitting the diagnosed daily dosage into two or three different dosages every day instead of consuming the full dosage at one time.
- Reduce the itching and hot flashing side effects of Niacin by taking a 325 mg of aspirin or ibuprofen about 30 minutes before taking Niacin. Usually this process provides an immediate relief from Niacin side effects. Continue with that procedure for a few weeks so that your body will adjust slowly.
- Avoid certain beverages when taking Niacin as they will increase the intensity of the flushing side effects. Such beverages include hot beverages and alcohol. At the very least, if you cannot stop taking these beverages, then wait 2 hours after consuming them before taking the Niacin. Get the best results from Niacin by taking it with a glass of cold milk.
- Reduce the dizziness you feel when taking Niacin by getting up slowly from a sitting or a lying position and hold on to something to steady yourself. Verify with your doctor the possibility of taking the medication just before bedtime to bypass the dizziness you feel.
- Prevent getting an upset stomach by eating a small snack before you take the medication.
