How to Reinvent Your Old Clothes
Use creativity and a splash of ingenuity to reinvent your old clothes. Make an old skirt new again with just a few simple alterations. Making new clothes is only the beginning. You can change old pants into a new handbag or even use scraps of material to accessorize your reinvented outfits.
Items Needed:
- Sewing kit and supplies
- Seam Ripper
- Fabric Scissors
- Iron and ironing board
- Sewing Machine (optional)
- Old Clothes
Methods
- Refinish the edge on a dress or other garment to update the look. Use ribbon or silk from another outfit to add flair to an old garment. Cut the shape of the neckline without compromising the structure of the garment. Cut, iron, and sew the silk or ribbon onto the exposed edge to create a finished appearance. Duplicate this on the lower edge of an article of clothing to match with the top.
- Sew strips of fabric together to form a piece of quilted cloth. Cut cloth against the bias in the opposite direction. Sew the strips of material back together to create a patchwork pattern composed of squares. Use the squares to make new dresses, pants, skirts or accessories like a bag.
- Make a skirt out of old men’s ties. Simply sew the ties together lengthwise to form a circle or a semicircle based on how much flair you want the skirt to have. Finish the top as a wrap-around skirt or install zippers of buttons. Finish the top of the skirt by turning the edge over and sewing a rolled seam. Leave the ends in the classic tie shape triangles to create a skirt with a jagged but finished look.
