How to Remove Moisture From Closets

Closets that retain moisture can potentially cause damage to clothing, shoes and other items stored in the area. In addition to undesirable odors, high humidity in a small space is a likely breeding ground for health hazards like mold and mildew. Removing moisture from closets is a task that requires patience and diligence, but the process is necessary in order to prevent musty smells and possible health problems.

  1. Use a moisture-absorbing product such as Damp Rid, to control the closet’s dampness. These products contain crystals designed to remove excess wetness in the air. Small and large buckets are available, and some moisture absorbing products come in convenient hanging containers that are ideal for closet spaces.

  2. Keep the closet door open. This allows more air to reach the small space, preventing moisture from developing. Opening windows for a few hours a day in the room where the closet is located also may help reduce moisture by increasing air circulation.

  3. Remove items from the closet to allow better air circulation. Consider donating clothing or other items that are seldom used. Move some clothing or items to another closet. A closet with fewer items is less likely to accumulate moisture because air can move freely through the space.

  4. Decrease the humidity in the closet using a dehumidifier. Designed specifically to remove excess moisture from indoor areas, this type of equipment collects water from the air and places it in a compartment that you must empty manually. Prices vary depending on the type and size of the machine. For small spaces like closets, a compact dehumidifier is sufficient.

  5. Determine the ultimate source of moisture. In some cases, a high humidity level results from a pipe or roof leak. Examine the ceiling of the closet for signs of water damage. Fixing the water leak will result in a permanent solution to the moisture problem.
