How to Remove Mold From Clothing

If you have clothing that has sat damp over a period of time, it is susceptible to mold and mold stains. If this occurs you will want to remove the stain as soon as possible to preserve your clothes. To do this it is important to take the correct steps to clean it properly.

  1. Take the clothing outdoors and use a stiff brush to sweep away any mold that is still on the surface. Sweep the mold onto newspaper, plastic or some material that can be immediately thrown away.

  2. Check that the clothing is machine washable. If you must take an item to the dry cleaners then do so.

  3. Put machine washables in your machine and wash immediately with hot water and laundry detergent.

  4. Remove freshly washed clothes from the washing machine and hang outdoors to dry.

  5. Check for lingering signs of the stain after the item has sun dried. If the stain remains, add either chlorine or color-safe bleach directly to the stain and launder the item again.
