How to Remove Mold Smell From Washing Machine

Washing machines can build up mold and mildew if not cleaned regularly, leading to a moldy smell inside the machine and on your clothes.  Routine cleaning is important to keep mold and mildew at bay.  You should thoroughly clean your washing machine every month.

Things you will need:

  • Clean cloths

  • Baking soda

  • Plastic container

  • Toothbrush

  • Spray bottles

  • Bleach

  • Vinegar

  • Gloves

  1. Mix 1/2 cup vinegar with 1/2 cup baking soda in a clean spray bottle.  Fill the rest of the way with water.  Put on gloves.

  2. Spray the solution around the basin of the washing machine.  Let the solution sit for about 15 minutes then wipe down with a clean cloth.  Use a toothbrush to get into tight areas.  Make sure to get all areas, including around the lid and the top of the basin.

  3. Fill a plastic container with the same mixture as in step one.   Take out all the parts that are meant to be removed, such as the detergent drawer, and soak them in the mixture for approximately 15 minutes.  Scrub the components with a toothbrush to remove any visible mold or debris.

  4. Spray the solution made in step one into the areas where the removable parts sit.  Clean inside these areas, using a toothbrush or similar soft bristle brush.

  5. Scrub any visible mold or mildew with a clean cloth or toothbrush dipped in bleach.

  6. Fill the basin with water and add 2 cups of undiluted bleach.  Be sure to use the hottest temperature setting, and let the machine run on the longest wash cycle.  Do not add any clothes to the washing machine.
