How to Remove Paint From Plastic Models With Mineral Spirits
Many times the plastic model in your project may not have come out correct or you just want to update the model. It is better to remove the existing paint and redo it from scratch. This can be done using mineral spirits instead of other solvents.
Materials Needed
- Plastic sheet
- Mineral spirits
- Rubber gloves
- Bucket
- Toothbrush
- Spread a plastic sheet over a flat surface. This will protect the area under the sheet from the chemical you will be using.
- Decide which type of paint is on the surface of the model if you are updating it. Look on the can of paint for the type of paint if you just painted the model. Mineral spirits do not work well on acrylic paint.
- Look for parts on the model that are fragile. Remove these parts so they are not damaged while cleaning the model. This will also make the paint removal process much easier and protect the parts from damage from the mineral spirits.
- Make sure you protect your hands with rubber gloves. The solvent can get on your skin and cause irritations.
- Open the can of mineral spirits and pour enough into a bucket to cover the plastic model. Take the model and place it in the bucket. Make sure the solvent cover the entire object. Allow the model to sit in the solvent for 15 minutes.
- Take the plastic model out of the bucket of solvent. Place the model on top of the plastic sheet. The paint should be loose but if it is not, soak the model for 10 minutes. Remove the model from the bucket.
- Dip a toothbrush into the mineral spirits and use it to remove any remaining paint. Use a clean cloth to clean the model.
