How to Remove Paint and Stain From Log Cabins
Log cabins are beautiful when they are first built. Over time however, the logs start to change in color and paint or stain is required to keep the cabin looking fresh and clean. After applying the stain or paint, removing it can be somewhat difficult.
- Power wash the log cabin and remove any mold, dirt or debris from it. Allow the cabin to fully dry, at least 24 hours.
- Apply paint thinner or lacquer to the logs. If this does not start to remove the thinner or the paint, start to gently scrap the logs with a paint scraper. Use a plastic scraper so that there are not any scratches or dents made into the logs.
- Start from the top and work down. This will allow the removed paint or thinner to fall downward.
- Apply a second coat of thinner or lacquer and gently scrape the logs again.
- Power wash the cabin again to remove the lacquer or thinner and also to help remove any paint or stain if there is any left. There is a paint removing solution that can be inserted into the power washer. It will be somewhat diluted by the water from the power washer and then it is sprayed onto the cabin. This is another measure that can be taken when removing paint or lacquer. The solution is somewhat expensive, but it will eliminate a great deal of work and effort. The solution can be purchased at hardware stores. It is also available online or in-home improvement magazines.
