How to Remove Runs in Automotive Paint

Automotive paint can have runs when the paint is applied too thick, or the paint is applied near the sheet metal or the paint is not mixed properly. The runs are much more noticeable when the paint is dry. Removing them is easy and can save you money when it comes to leaving out the auto body shop.

Materials Needed:

  • 500 grit sandpaper

  • 800 grit sandpaper

  • 1200 grit sandpaper

  • Garden hose

  • Microfiber cloth

  • Orbital polisher

  • Liquid rubbing compound

  1. Make sure the auto is parked in an area that is well shaded. Also allow the car to cool before painting it. Inspect the car so you can easily find the runs later.

  2. Sand the runs with sandpaper that is 500-grit. Apply gently pressure when you sand and use circular motions. The area should be smooth with no shine.

  3. Change over to 800-grit sandpaper and sand the run again. Using the same gentle pressure and circular motions that you used with the 500-grit sandpaper.

  4. Use 1200-grit sandpaper to sand the runs. Use gentle pressure and circular motions over the area.

  5. Turn on the garden hose and rinse the auto thoroughly to remove any sanding particles. Use a microfiber cloth to dry the vehicle. Allow the auto to completely dry before moving to the next step.

  6. Take an orbital polisher and apply the liquid rubbing compound over the pad on it. Place the polisher on the area that needs polishing and turn on the polisher. Go over the area until you notice a shine. The more you polish, the more shine there will be.
