How to Remove a Dent With a Hair Dryer

It is not uncommon for vehicles to receive minor dents and scrapes. When this happens you can either take your vehicle to an auto body repair shop or attempt to remove the dents yourself. Hair dryers are an essential tool in do it yourself dent removal. They can be used to heat and soften a car's fiberglass and make it easier to pop out the dents.

  1. Clean the area of the dent with a dry or damp cloth. Remove any dust, debris or paint shavings.

  2. Plug the hair dryer into a power outlet and turn it on. You may need to use an extension cord or a car cigarette lighter adapter in order to use the hair dryer outside. Turn it on.

  3. Hold the hair dryer two to three inches away from the dent and hold it in place for several minutes. If the dent is larger than the tip or range of the hair dryer, slowly move it around the dent to heat the entire area.

  4. Gently press on the dent after five minutes of heating it to see if it has softened. Continue to heat it until it is soft enough to move when pressed.

  5. Located the back side of the dent. Slide your hand behind the dent and press on it to push it out. If it is not able to be pushed out, heat for five more minutes and try again. If you cannot access the back of the dent, use a plunger to suck out the dent. Place the plunger over the dent or the main or deepest part of the dent. Press it in and pull it back out to suction out the dent.
