How to Reverse Hair Relaxer

People who have naturally curly, coarse and unruly hair will often apply a hair relaxer in order to transform their hair into straight, smoother tresses. While this proves to be very effective for many, oftentimes the chemicals involved are too harsh and hair can become exceedingly dry, brittle and damaged. If this is the case, there are some steps you can take in order to reverse the effects of the hair relaxer.

  1. Have as much of the ends trimmed off as you can. Chemically damaged hair is often most damaged at the ends. Apply a deep conditioner regularly until your hair begins to show signs of regaining health and hydration. If the damage is too extreme, not even intense deep conditioning will repair the hair completely. If this is the case, move on to step two.

  2. Allow your chemically relaxed hair to grow out gradually so you can return to your hair's natural state. Apply hair grease to your dry hair and use a flat iron to straighten your natural hair at the roots as it grows out. This will allow your natural hair to blend with your chemically treated hair in the meantime.

  3. Allow your chemically relaxed hair to grow out so that it can be cut completely off. It may be easier to handle if you go in to the salon for a trim every six weeks until your natural hair is completely returned.

  4. Use a protein rich shampoo when washing your hair, but avoid washing your hair every day. Every other day is more than enough. This will let your hair rebuild strength as it grows out. Keep using a deep conditioner every time you shampoo. By skipping daily shampoos, you will allow the natural oils from your scalp to enrich and strengthen your hair further.
