How to Remove a Garbage Disposal From a Kitchen Sink

The garbage disposal is a very convenient kitchen appliance. It works by grinding up food into smaller particles so that the food will pass through to the sewage system. Over time, the unit will either need to be removed or replaced due to excessive exposure to water and food.

Things you will need:

  • Flat screwdriver

  • Bucket

  • Wrench

  • Hammer

  1. Shut off the electricity. If the unit is directly wired, shut off the electricity at the electrical panel. If it runs on a plug, unplug the garbage disposal. Check to make sure that the disposal is off by clicking the on switch.

  2. Disconnect the hoses. If resistance is met when trying to remove the drain pipe, then try an alternate fitting location.

  3. Put a bucket underneath the disposal. Put a board on top of the stool to provide added support while removing the disposal.

  4. Loosen the metal ring that connects the garbage disposal to the sink support. This can be achieved by using the hands to turn the ring clockwise. If the ring does not loosen from using bare hands, then place a screwdriver through the loop and start turning it.

  5. Take the splash guard off. This is located at the top of the disposal. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screw that holds the access panel. This will be located at the bottom of the disposal.

  6. Remove the panel. Once the panel is removed, there should be exposed wiring. This wiring is the power cord for the disposal. Disconnect the disposal power cord and lower the disposal onto the board.

  7. Remove the support fittings. Use a wrench to loosen the screws that are holding the support collar in place at the sink drain area. Push the support up until the strainer basket is exposed. Use a screwdriver to push down on the snap ring. Once the snap ring pops off, the metal support system can easily be removed.
