How to Remove a Lawn Mower Blade
There are several reasons why you may need to remove your lawn mower blade such as for cleaning or sharpening the blade. Removing a lawn mower blade from your mower isn't hard, but there are some safety precautions you should take before removing the blade.
Items Needed
- socket set
- piece of scrap wood
- Park your mower on a flat surface. Turn the engine off and make sure it is cooled completely. You should not attempt to remove the blade on your mower while any part of the engine is hot or warm to the touch.
- Check your oil lid to make sure it is on securely so no oil can leak out while working on the mower.
- Remove the spark plug wire to prevent the mower from an accidental start.
- Siphon any gas out of the lawn mower tank to prevent gas from spilling while you are working on your mower.
- Tip your mower onto its side for easy access to the blade.
- Clean any debris from the blade itself, the drive belt and from around where the blade connects to the mower.
- Place a piece of scrap wood between the mower deck and the blade. This will stop the blade from turning while removing the nut or bolt that anchors the blade to the lawn mower.
- Find a socket that will fit the nut or bolt holding the blade in place. Loosen the nut by turning it counterclockwise.
- Carefully remove the blade from the mower.
