How to Remove an Industrial Lift Truck Battery

An industrial lift truck is commonly referred to as a forklift. This is an industrial piece of equipment designed to lift heavy objects. Removing a battery from a lift truck requires two forklifts and an extra person, known as a spotter.

Items Needed

  • a second forklift

  • plastic terminal covers

  • heavy 3 foot chain with C-hooks on each end

  • heavy wooden palette

  • spotter

  1. Move your two industrial lift trucks into a large unobstructed area with plenty of space to maneuver in.

  2. Lower the fork on the truck that the battery will be removed from.

  3. Place the palette where you want the battery to be after removing it. Make sure it is located on a flat level surface.

  4. Turn off the engine of the forklift you are removing the battery from.

  5. Allow the engine to cool.

  6. Place the plastic terminal covers on the metal terminals of the battery you are removing. This will prevent any contact of the chain or hooks with the terminals.

  7. Unplug the cables that run from the forklift battery to the forklift itself.

  8. Look at the battery and find the openings on the sides of it. This is where your chain will go.

  9. Take the C-hooks on each end of the chain and place them in the battery openings you just located.

  10. Lower the fork on the operating forklift, and bring the two industrial lift trucks together.

  11. Place the chain over the forks as close as possible to the back of the forklift.

  12. Anchor the chain and make sure it is secure.

  13. Use the second forklift to lift the battery out.

  14. Check with your spotter to keep you informed on how the process is going.

  15. Drive the operating forklift to the palette and lower the battery down to rest on it.

  16. Disconnect the chain from the forklift.
