How to Repaint Aluminum Window Frames

The purpose of an aluminum window frame is to form a tight seal and provide soundproofing for the window. This style of window frame is very durable and requires very little maintenance.  Should you need to spruce up the appearance of your aluminum window frame, repainting it is one option.

What You'll Need:

• Soapy water


• Clean cloths


• WD-40


• Painter's tape


• Metal primer


• Paint

1. Clean the entire window frame using a warm, soapy water mixture and a soft cloth. Once the frame has been covered in soap, rinse it well with hot water and dry using a clean cloth.


2. If the aluminum frame is dirty you can get rid of any tough stains or grease by spraying on a thin coating of WD-40 on the area to be treated. Take a toothbrush to scrub the spots and lift them. Once the area has been treated, take a clean, soft cloth and wipe the frame.


3. Apply wither painter's tape or masking tape over the glass or screens to serve as protection. If you are using a spray paint, you'll need to cover the glass or screen with newspapers as well. Ensure the tape is secure before moving to the next step.


4. Apply a coating of metal primer or a self-etching primer per the manufacturer's instructions. Allow the product to dry before moving to the next step.


5. Paint the window frame using an interior or exterior paint. The type of paint you select will depend on which side you're working on. Allow the coat to dry then apply another coat.


6. Take off the tape carefully by pulling it from the painted area at a slight angle. You can use a razor knife to remove any paint that may have seeped onto the glass up under the tape.
