How to Repair Round Gutters

Proper maintenance is required to keep your round gutters in working order, and will ensure that your home is fully protected from water damage. However, if your round gutters need repair, the good news is that it can most likely be taken care of by yourself and fairly inexpensively. Checking your gutters several times throughout the year will ensure its proper function.

  1. Assessing Damage: Inspect your round gutters for damage. Pay special attention to the hardware, joints and elbows for leaks, loose connections or rust.

  2. Look for clogs: Make sure to check the gutter for any dirt, debris or leaves which may be preventing the water from running through. Clean, if necessary. To prevent future clogs, you can purchase gutter guards which will trap any debris and keep it out of the gutters.

  3. Repair and replace gutter: Depending on the damage to the gutter, you may simply be able to repair, rather than replace. If the holes or leaks are not significant, you can use silicone caulk and patch the holes or seal the leaks. Use a caulk that is the same color as the gutter. If the damage is substantial, it is easier to take down the old gutter section and replace with a new one.

  4. Replace downspouts or connections: If the downspouts or connections have holes or are corroded, you must remove the old ones. Then replace them with a new one, attaching with screws and straps.

  5. Sagging gutters: If there are any sags, use metal straps to attach the gutter to the roof, adding support. If the sag caused any leaks, it is important to use a sealant around the leak to prevent any additional leakage.
