How to Repair Steel House Siding
Steel is one of the most durable, weather-resistant materials that you can purchase for exterior siding. Having said that, over time it does tend to show scratches and develop rust. Thankfully there are easy remedies to repair steel siding.
Things you will need:
- Mineral spirits
- Microfiber cloth
- Rust-retardant metal primer
- Paintbrushes
- Acrylic house paint
- Apply the spirits to a cloth. Pour some of the mineral spirits on a microfiber cloth. Rub the cloth over the siding. This will get rid of all the dirt, tar and other build-up from the siding.
- Put primer over the siding. Using a paintbrush, apply metal primer to the scratched areas of the siding. Let it dry for the specified amount of time on the manufacturer's instructions. Once the area has dried, look it over for any additional scratched areas on the siding that you may have missed previously. If you still notice scratches, apply more primer.
- Paint over the primer. After the primer has dried for the proper amount of time, paint over it with a coat of acrylic paint that matches the color of the existing siding. Be sure to use a different paint brush than you used with the primer. Let the acrylic paint dry according to the specifications of the manufacturer.
- Continue painting. Once the first coat of paint has dried, look over the siding and assess the condition of it. If you still notice any scratches or rust spots, then apply another coat of paint.
