How to Repair a Bike Gear

Bike gears need to be replaced from time to time. If you’re a serious cyclist it will save a lot of time and money if you know how to do this for yourself. It only takes a few tools and about 10 minutes of time to successfully do this.

Repairing a bike gear is going to be necessary if you plan on becoming an avid bike rider. It is a good idea that you know how to properly do this yourself.

What You’ll Need:

  • Chain Whip

  • Freewheel Socket

  • Large Adjustable Wrench

  • Channel-Lock Pliers

  1. Remove the wheel from your bike. Take the knob and the skewer lever off of your wheel axle and pull the skewer out. Stand the wheel up and face the gear cluster away. Balance the wheel between your feet and put your freewheel socket onto the wheel above the axle.

  2. Push the adjustable wrench down on your freewheel socket. The socket will come off when turned counterclockwise. Pull the wrench down and unscrew your freewheel cluster with your fingers to finish it up.

  3. Pry your bent tooth using your channel lock pliers. Spin your gear cluster and look at it closer to check the teeth that are left. As long as they all look straight you can put the freewheel on the axle.

  4. Put your skewer back into place and put the skewer knobs back into place. The wheel can then be put back onto your bike. Ensure that the wheel is properly secured onto the bike before you ride it again.
