How to Replace a Bike Gear
Replacing a bike gear may be necessary if the gears are badly damaged. Those who are avid cyclists will have to deal with this every now and then. It’s far cheaper and easier to do this on your own rather than pay a bike shop to do this simple repair for you.
You will need to know how to replace a bike gear as this is a part of your bike that gets a lot of abuse. There are a lot of things that can cause the bike gear to become damaged while you ride your bike regularly. It is easy to replace the bike gear and this is a necessary task you should become good at.
What You’ll Need:
- Locktight Solution
- 5-mm Hex Key
- Pedal your bike forward and shift it to the smallest gear possible on the front. The bike will need to be leaned against the wall once you do this.
- Kneel down so that you can find the four bolts that are on the outer part of the biggest gear on your bike in the front. These bolts can be found on the outside of the pedal axle on the bike.
- Hold on to the pedal with one hand and remove the bolts using the hex key with the other. Pull the gear so that it falls off or at least becomes loose. Pass your gear down through the crank arm and off of the crank that is over your pedal.
- Put on the new gear and put the pedal through the middle of your gear. The gear needs to be threaded up the crank’s arm and placed on the middle gear.
- Use the solution on your bolt threads. Put the bolts in through the holes that match them. Use the hex key to tighten the bolts up.
