How to Repair a Rubber Roof

Rubber roofing is one of the most durable types of roofing on the market. However, just like anything else it can become worn and damaged over time and will need to be repaired. All you will need to repair your rubber roof if it is leaking is rubber adhesive and a couple of basic tools.

  1. Sweep your roof with a standard household broom to remove any debris that has settled on your roof so that you can clearly see the surface of the roof to inspect the existing rubber adhesive to see where it has worn away.

  2. Inspect the entire surface of your roof looking for areas where the rubber adhesive is thinned or worn away.

  3. Use a piece of brightly colored chalk to mark the area that are in need of repair so that you can easily locate them.

  4. Clean the areas that are in need of repair with warm water and then allow the areas to air dry thoroughly.

  5. Apply rubbing alcohol to both the top and bottom of the rubber seams that you will be repairing.

  6. Lift up on the damaged seams so that you have peeled up the surface of the seams approximately twelve inches.

  7. Clean the areas completely and remove any old and damaged rubber roofing material using rubbing alcohol.

  8. Apply fresh rubber adhesive to the damaged seams. You want to be sure to apply the material to both the top and bottom of the seams that you are repairing.

  9. Run a silicone hand roller over the seams to set the new adhesive. You will need to continue this process for a while until the rubber adhesive that you added to the seams has set.

  10. Apply seam tape to the repaired seams of your rubber roof to further protect the seams and make them more durable to withstand the elements that they are often exposed to.
