How to Repair an Old Kitchen Swinging Door

Repairing an old kitchen swinging door can be a problem. A lot of the older types of hinges are hard to come by. You could buy a whole new door which can be expensive, or just try replacing the hardware with a more modern type of hinge, that can be found at your local hardware store.

How to Repair an Old Kitchen Swinging Door

There are some websites online that carry restored swinging doors and hinges that have been refurbished from old houses but cost a pretty penny. If you want to keep the door as close to original as possible this might be your best bet.

Steps to Replacing Hinges

  1. You will need to measure your hinges and try to purchase new hinges as close to the size and shape of the old hinges.

  2. Remove the door and the hinges from the door facing.

  3. Take one of the new hinges and place where the old hinge was using a pencil, trace around the hinge.

  4. This is where you are better off to buy a little bigger so it will cover where the old hinge was mounted.

  5. Using a hammer and chisel cut out where the hinge will be mounted.

  6. Repeat the process on other hinges.

  7. Re-hang the door.

  8. Note - Better to buy the hinges a little bigger than the old hinge so it will cover where the old hinge was mounted. If the hinge is smaller than the original it will show the location where the old hinge was and will be hard to hide.
